Some Summer Events in London

Now it's actually technically summer I thought it'd be worth looking forward to some of the city happenings over the next few months. This isn't an exhaustive list; just things that have caught my eye or ear. Maybe as more things come up, there'll have to be another one of these blogs. A lot happens in London.

Greenwich and Docklands International Festival 2013

Already happening! But fear not, there's oodles left to do. Greenwich and Docklands International Festival kicked off with a beached whale, although that's now be moved on to a happier place (presumably Belgium where it was made). Dance and physical theatre is high up on the agenda; in particular I think One Million – Tangled Feet's representation of youth unemployment in the UK – looks fresh and epic. And Inspector Sands' tour of Woolwich high street is sure to be revealing.

City of London Festival

Here's another festival that's started without you. City of London Festival continues until July 26, so you've plenty of time to get involved. Highlights include classical music in magnificent city venues (Brahms in Stationers' Hall, Britten in Southwark Cathedral), illuminating free talks, and dancing on the steps of St Paul's and in Paternoster Square. There's also a Tree Trail for the duration; get your leaflet from the City Information Centre.

Chap Olympiad

Those suffering withdrawal symptoms ever since the Tweed Run bid 'toodle pip' will be relieved to know the Chap Olympiad is almost here. A day of games in Bedford Square includes pipeathalon, iron board surfing and umbrella jousting. Contestants will likely be loosening themselves up with cucumber gin beforehand. Spiffing. It's on Saturday July 13.

Epping Ongar Railway

If the Chap Olympiad piques your interest, so too will the Epping Ongar Railway heritage days. Hop on a vintage bus which whisks you to Ongar (it used to be part of the Central Line but didn't cut the mustard), then ride the lovely shiny steam train to North Weald and back. Special days are taking place all through the summer weekends. On July 10-21 there's a real ale weekend. I'll probably be at that one.

East End Film Festival

Guess what; this one's just started too. The East End Film Festival is laying on a tasty visual buffet of film premieres across some of the area's coolest cinemas and venues (Genesis, the Troxy, Rich Mix). There are also free pop-up events and industry masterclasses. It runs until July 10.

Great for:

  • Art and Culture
  • Fun and Leisure
  • Off the beaten track
